Custom Sign Design Tucson: Drawings and Concepts From Designers Who Also Build and Install
Addisigns has offered custom sign design in Tucson since Tom Addis opened the shop as a sign painter in 1955.
Today our in-house designers create logo and signage concepts and the drawings that guide every sign we build. Because our designers work down the hall from our fabrication shop, permit specialist and installation crews, every design is drawn with the build, the permit and the install already in mind.
A sign has one main job. It has to tell people who you are and where to turn, quickly. That takes more than a nice logo on a panel. It takes the right size, the right lighting and the right sign type for your building and your street. Our design process is built around those choices.
Every great sign starts with understanding your business and your brand.
It Starts With a Consultation
Every project starts with a conversation. We want to know about your business, your customers and what you need the sign to do. A new restaurant on a busy road has different needs than a medical office in a business park or a shopping center adding tenants.
We will ask about your location, your existing branding and any rules from your landlord or property owner. If you are replacing or updating a sign, our team can schedule a site survey. Our site surveys are accurate and on time, and they give our designers real measurements to work from. That matters most for branding updates, name change-overs and refurbishments, where the new sign has to fit what is already there.
Logo and Brand Visibility
Your sign is often the largest version of your logo anyone will ever see. Our designers adapt your brand so it works at that scale and at a distance. Some logos have fine lines or small text that disappear on a building. Some colors look great on a screen and wash out in bright Arizona daylight.
We help you keep what makes your brand recognizable while making it readable on a sign. If you don’t have a logo yet, our designers can create logo and signage concepts with you. Either way, the goal is a sign that looks like your business and can be read from the street.
Readability and Viewing Distance
Drivers need to read your sign in time to slow down and turn. That depends on a few simple things.
We look at these factors for your site and recommend a layout that works for the people who need to find you. For more ideas, see our business sign tips.
- Letter height. Larger letters read from farther away. The right height depends on how far back your sign sits and how fast traffic moves past it.
- Contrast. Strong contrast between letters and background reads better than similar colors, day or night.
- Simple wording. A name and one or two words about what you do are easier to take in than a long list.
- Placement. A sign that faces traffic and sits clear of trees, other signs and building features gets noticed.
Choosing Illumination
Lighting decides how your sign looks after dark and how it reads during the day. We walk you through the options and what each one does well.
Front-lit channel letters
Pan channel letters glow through colored faces. They are bright, easy to read at night and a common choice for storefronts and retail centers.
Halo-lit letters
Reverse pan channel letters light the wall behind them, creating a soft halo. They suit offices, galleries and brands that want a cleaner look.
Cabinet signs, neon and digital displays
Lighted cabinet signs carry a full logo on one face. Neon brings a classic glow. Digital message centers let you change your message whenever you need to. We help you pick the one that fits your brand and your budget.
Matching Sign Type to Your Site and Code
Not every sign type fits every property. A freestanding sign near the road may suit a building set far back from traffic. A wall sign may make more sense for a storefront close to the sidewalk. Shopping centers and office parks often need multi-tenant signs or monument signs that serve several businesses at once.
Local code also shapes what you can build. Size, height, lighting and placement limits vary by city and by zoning.
Addisigns has worked with Southern Arizona municipalities for more than 60 years, and our designers work with that knowledge from the start.
That way the design you approve is one that can move through sign permitting without starting over.

See It Before We Build It
Renderings for Approval
Before we build anything, you see it. Our designers prepare drawings that show your sign’s layout, colors and lighting.
These drawings do two jobs. They let you approve exactly what you are paying for. They also guide our fabrication team and support the permit application. Everyone works from the same plan.
Revisions Until It’s Right
Your first look at a design is a starting point. If a color feels off, the letters need more room, or the logo needs to sit differently, tell us. We revise the drawings and send them back for another look. Once you approve the design, we move into permits, production and installation.
Mike Addis, our CEO, personally oversees projects, and the same local team stays with your sign from the first drawing to the day it lights up. We serve businesses across Tucson, Phoenix and all of Southern Arizona. Call 520-748-1540 to get started, or see more finished signs in our portfolio.
